The Polyphonic Spree

The Beginning Stages of…

Editor's Review:

Featuring well over a score of musicians, instruments and voices, The Beginning Stages of the Polyphonic Spree is a choral symphonic pop album of gigantic proportions complete with creepy, cult-like white robes. The Polyphonic Spree’s predominant sound is big and bright, and the song titles are simlarly luminous, the majority of which feature the words “day” or “sun” and sometimes both (“Light & Day/Reach for the Sun”). Gimmicks aside, The Polyphonic Spree displays a talent for pristinely crafted pop songs. With simple refrains and extravagant instrumentation, songs like “In the Sun” and “Soldier Girl” are as enjoyable as they are memorable; even bittersweet balads like “Days Like This Keep Me Warm” shimmer with a soft glow. However, The Beginning Stages of… meets unfortunate ruin with the last track, “A Long Day,” in which rhythmless humming drones on for over 36 pretentious minutes — simply unforgivable.
