DevilDriver

DevilDriver

Editor's Review:

Taking its name from bells witches use to drive away evil spirits, Coal Chamber’s former frontman Dez Fafara returns to spit foreboding words of metal fury with his new outfit DevilDriver. On this, the band’s first release for Roadrunner Records, Fafara growls and seethes lyrics like “This is the last great hate song / Scorned is this life / Scarred is my soul,” on the charmingly titled “Die (And Die Now)” as gutiarists Evan Pitts and Jeffery Kendrick pulverize conventional harmony and melody into a heavy, dark and bitter paste. Joe Boeklin’s drumming is blunt and forceful — dense cymbal crashes and relentless double-bass push songs like “Mountain” ferociously forward. Without the gloss of flashy production tricks, DevilDriver is left raw and concussive, hitting much like a primitive club.
