U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle Ireland

Editor's Review:

Filmed at the pastoral outdoor amphitheater at Slane Castle — situated in the Boyne Valley, overlooking the River Boyne in County Meath, Ireland — on September 1st, 2001, U2 Go Home is a stunning concert video, presented in widescreen format. Visually, the DVD is inspiring; excellent camera work shows the darkening skies, the manor floor-lit and looming on a hill above the venue, a crowd of 80,000 (many of whom raising Irish flags or wearing patriotic shirts) ready to rally on four of their most prominent countrymen and an elaborate stage set-up complete with atmospheric lighting and a wide, heart-shaped runway that circles out into the audience.
Sonically, the band’s performance is also quite a spectacle. Though probably benefited by some post-production tweaking, the sound is powerful and immediate, aided by U2’s confident and heartfelt delivery. Running through some of their most recognizable songs, spanning their history, U2 proves deserving of their iconic status. Their performance of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is awe-inspiring, especially given the setting, and a stripped-down version of “Desire,” during which drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton join The Edge and Bono at the cusp of the heart-shaped walkway, shows the band getting up close and personal — as much as is possible with 80,000 people — with the audience.
This is the kind of concert video that makes you envious of the people who were lucky enough to be in attendance. The DVD also includes the 1984 documentary “The Unforgettable Fire,” which chronicles the band recording the album of the same name at Slane Castle to further sweeten the package.
