Z-Man

Dope Or Dogfood?

Editor's Review:

It was just a matter of time before Z-Man got the chance to expose his brain to the world. With a series of classic underground projects that didn’t reach many heads outside of the Bay Area, the hustle has finally paid off for Z, as he is the first artist to come out on Hieroglyphics brother label, Refill Records.
The San Francisco native is about to put the Bay back on the radar with a style like nothing you’ve ever heard. Like a true artist, Z paints a picture with each song, and using that metaphor you could call him an animator. Humor, exaggeration and meticulous narratives are the tools used in constructing an identity and sound all of his own. With help from producer Moss, Z-Man swims through and bounces off beats with a natural ease. Through all the humor, Z confronts real issues such as interracial affairs, addictions and contradictions but strays away from the preacher role or opinionated rants. Take for example “No Cure For Sugar” where Z spits, “Addicted to cancer like there’s some kind of cure for it / fiend for nicotine / chemo therapy please / by all means we all fiends / you can’t get off the coffee.” Dope or Dogfood? is a breath of fresh air in the days of manufactured hip-hop.
Z isn’t afraid to say anything, and doesn’t care if you get offended, and that’s what hip-hop is really about. Get used to hearing the name, cause now it’s fitting to crack. Word Billy.
