Hoobastank

The Reason

Editor's Review:

Hoobastank’s second major label studio effort, The Reason, begins much like their self-titled debut: it kicks you in the face. But as the album progresses, the growth of this quartet shows through as they diverge from their signature fusion of aggression and melody and focus certain tracks on either of the two extremes. Songs like “From the Heart” and the album’s first single, “Out of Control,” definitely keep the energy up, while the softer tracks (most notably “The Reason”) add a nice contrast, smoothing out the album and making it feel like a truly complete work. And that, my friends, is the real reason The Reason is here: to remind us that some bands out there are still concerned with growing as artists and not just engineering hits.
