Dizzee Rascal

Boy In Da Corner

Editor's Review:

I'm not really into mainstream hip-hop, and I'm not an expert on any kind of hip-hop - but this isn't mainstream, and you don't need an expert to tell you it will probably become mainstream before it goes away. Dizzee Rascal is an 18-year-old East London MC whose album won the UK's Mercury Music Prize over runners-up like Radiohead and Coldplay. It's original, with quirky, spastic electronic beats and lyrics that can only come out of poverty and street life. But unlike gangsta rap, there's no thug malice and not even much profanity. Dizzee strings together his own thoughts, stories and conversations with others, leaving out the holier-than-thou aspect and giving himself a role only secondary to the lifestyle he raps about. It is definitely hip-hop to listen to, if you can get around the crazy ghetto-Brit accent.
