No Motiv

Daylight Breaking

Editor's Review:

Long before a bevy of Vagrant Records groups infiltrated the countdowns of TRL, the most imminent threat of mainstream exposure was posed in the capable hands of No Motiv. The group’s latest jaunt, Daylight Breaking, features many of the same ingredients that have made them hard to ignore over the past five years. The only difference is that this disc seems to be lurking eerily close to a super-slick radio rock sound, replete with far too many tired analogies about “falling” into something, and even more instances of an “oh, poor me” sentiment. Not to worry, however; tracks like “Grey Notes Fall” hearken to the No Motiv of yore with solid drumming, and resourceful guitars coupled with melodies that emerge as worthy anthems for those who would otherwise write the CD off as a veiled attempt at universal appeal.
