Incubus

A Crow Left of the Murder…

Editor's Review:

Not quite brainy enough to be progressive, and not nearly aggressive enough to qualify as simple meathead rock, Incubus occupies a strange place between musical genres. To their credit, the band has occupied that space remarkably well. A Crow Left of the Murder has its share of losers - the sappy "Southern Girl" and the disjointed, misguided "Priceless" - but for the most part, these songs are expansive, varied in tone and tempo and should have something to catch even the most casual ear. "Agoraphobia" features a catchy chorus, and quirky, paranoid musings, while "Zee Deveel" boasts a campy, playful arrangement. A Crow Left of the Murder is a bit hit-or-miss, but the band's strong musicianship keeps it interesting; even in their most innocuous pop numbers ("Here In My Room"), Incubus commands an impressive palette of sounds, and they're not afraid to show it off.
