Denali

The Instinct

Editor's Review:

In the ever-growing and much heralded chasm of lullaby-pop bands featuring female vocalists and silky-smooth minimalism, bands like Denali can sometimes get overlooked, albeit by no fault of their own. Coalescing fuzzy strings and vocalist Maura Davis' velvety croons, The Instinct bends the typical indie rock rules, not to mention the standard Jade Tree sound, forming an angelic miasma of rock 'n' roll aptitude. Imagine if Fleetwood Mac had managed to display a bit more edge and the result would lie very close to tunes like "Run Through," a self-loathsome ode that institutes electric drum-work alongside synth keyboards and manages not to come off sounding like an archetypal umbrella of new wave noise. Herein lies the disc's appeal. With the range of dimensions Denali approaches, it would be hard to find a low point on The Instinct.
