Vast Aire
“Look Mom…No Hands” b/w “Why’sdaskyblue?”
Editor's Review:
Vast Aire is one half of the group Cannibal Ox, now on artistic hiatus, but their Def Jux Records debut was an indie rap smash hit. For his first solo single (also the title track of a forthcoming solo full-length album), Vast has tapped West Coast producer Madlib for a hectic, jazzy track that uses whirling keys, big and blunted horn section stabs and a shuffling beat. VAs voice is smooth but not soft - smooth like powered gravel, like rock yard silt - and he delivers lyrics of furiously clever personal superiority and social observation in an inventive time. This singles B-side, Whysdaskyblue? was produced by VAs Atoms Family cohort, Cryptic One, and features a big, bottom-ended beat run over by spacey synth tones. Its pretty good stuff, and quite possibly a good gauge of whats to come.
