Iron & Wine

Our Endless Numbered Days

Editor's Review:

The folksy, bluesy acoustic mesh on this record is instantly attractive to the ear. It’s not funky, or even very rhythmic - at least in a traditional, ass-shaking kind of way. What makes Iron & Wine’s fourth effort so compelling to listen to is its sheer musical honesty and deceptively simple depth. Frontman Sam Beam delivers his lyrics in an almost hushed tone, not lilting or always particularly sweet, but poignant and quite beautiful when backed by Sarah Beam. The music, which is constructed largely of acoustic guitar and vocals, is punctuated with percussion and added instrumentation only as needed, but each carefully placed accompaniment is almost a movement in its own right, as is the case with the deep, resonant emanations on “Cinder and Smoke” or the earthy but nimble slide guitar work on “Teeth In the Grass.”
