Planet Asia

The Grand Opening

Editor's Review:

After releasing many singles and an LP on five different labels, Planet Asia has found a home on Avatar with the release of his solo debut, The Grand Opening. He announces his arrival on the bouncy “16 Bars of Death,” but his real grand opening comes a few tracks later, on “Pure Coke,” where he rips through blaring trumpets and trunk-rattling bass. The album is filled with solid tracks, like “Summertime in the City,” whose halting piano loops and hand claps will definitely keep heads nodding when the sun comes out. There are a few fillers like “It’s All Big,” which sounds like an out-of-place Neptunes wannabe. But most of the production is solid, with hard beats that complement Planet Asia’s gritty delivery. Most of his rhymes deal with the mean streets of Fresno, CA, focusing more on escaping the ghetto rather than running it.
