The Hip Hop Box

Editor's Review:

They say, “to know where you’re going, you must know where you’ve been.” That phrase can be applied to music, especially to a relatively new genre like hip-hop. And now, someone has finally put together an extensive collection of important and innovative hip-hop tracks, entitled The Hip Hop Box. This box set celebrates 25 years of hip-hop, starting in 1979 with The Sugarhill Gang’s big bang theory of rap, “Rapper’s Delight,” all the way to 2003, with 50 Cent’s “21 Questions” (which the box dubs as “hip-hop’s new millennium equivalent of ‘I Need Love’”). Spanning through four CDs and over 51 tracks, The Box breaks hip-hop down into a chronological roller-coaster ride through the vaults of rap, hitting high and low points, yet never losing track of providing historically innovative songs.
The Hip Hop Box is more than a best of; it’s a tool of education for new jacks and a stroll down memory lane for the old school that have been there. Although The Box misses some of hip-hop’s big names like LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, E-40 and Eminem, forgets to include a solo Notorious B.I.G. or Snoop Dogg track and features some tracks that might have people questioning the selection, it still manages to create a useful and respected account of hip-hop over the past 25 years. It’s Hip-Hop 101 in the form of four CDs.
