Nekromantix

Dead Girls Don't Cry

Editor's Review:

I was under the impression that Nekromantix was one of psychobilly’s greatest legends. Sadly, a funny title (Dead Girls Don’t Cry) is all that might push this album to any memorable status. The new release falls in line with label mate Tiger Army’s technique of combining ‘50s rebel rock with modern morbid punk; yet the blatant Misfits-style references to ghouls and gore (e.g., “Backstage Pass to Hell,” “Ghoulina,” “What’s On Your Neighbor’s BBQ?,” etc…) is simply beaten to death. Always interesting is a stand-up bass amidst a shower of distortion, but the singing is weak, with a style in constant battle between gritty punk and sarcastic creep — and in either, lead singer Kim Nekroman is often off-key. Melodies are usually vague and always uninteresting. Beware the bad Elvis impression on track five, “Where Do Monster’s Go.”
