Bright Eyes, Neva Dinova

One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels

Editor's Review:

The collaborative results of two separate entities, One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels plays its subtle dichotomy in a seamless blend of warm, intoxicated elan. Bright Eyes mastermind Conor Oberst and Neva Dinova’s Jake Bellows assemble six tracks of nostalgia seeped in melancholia and drawl ripe dejection over a poor man’s orchestra backing — guitars, mandolins, banjos, fiddles, percussion, glockenspiel, horns and organs. Utilizing his signature lyrical device, Oberst turns cliché phrases on their ear, exploring the multiple meanings of the English language; Bellows’ approach is more straightforward, but no less clever (e.g., “baby it’s the beer that’s smiling / it ain’t me” from “Tripped”). Clocking in at just over 20 minutes, the EP reads like a succinct romantic postscript that follows a sprawling, drunkenly penned love letter.
