Bring You to Your Knees: A Tribute to Guns N’ Roses

Editor's Review:

You could argue that a tribute to Guns N’ Roses is premature, considering that the group itself was on tour only a few months ago. Then again, the band being honored here is the old Guns, the ones who showed up drunk to the Grammy awards, started riots at their own concerts and generally ruled the world before Axl Rose decided to fire everybody but himself and go into hiding. The new GNR is a joke, but I would still rather watch a fat, haggard Axl and a bunch of scabs than listen to the posers on this album. Two tracks are actually pretty good (“Paradise City” by Eighteen Visions and “I Used to Love Her” by Every Time I Die), but the rest is downright shameful. Half of these guys sound like they’re waiting for their testicles to drop, and the ones who have hit puberty still can’t sing; so instead they shout, squeal and generally make like a bunch of drunks on karaoke night. The other “musicians” are equally inept, and since none of them are talented enough to play the songs straight up, they have to play really fast and hope that nobody notices. I noticed; there’s not a single decent solo anywhere. Slash might have been a lush in an oversized top hat, but he was also one of the greatest lead guitarists in history; these hacks make absolutely no attempt to live up to his standard. I wonder: did they lack the ability, or the nerve? Probably both. This is the kind of effort I could tolerate from a high school cover band, but the fact that a label would spend money to record this material just boggles my mind. It’ll bring you to your knees, alright, just like a bad hangover. You should avoid both.
