the Hold Steady

Almost Killed Me

Editor's Review:

I’ll be honest, this CD sat alone on my shelf for months before I got around to writing it up; mainly due to the fact that I don’t have much patience for what some would call “joke bands.” Not that THS necessarily think of themselves as a joke — but I do. To be fair, the lyrics are cynical and edgy, the music is mostly all-around rock, and the album has an under-produced indie sound that gives it a genuine, homemade feel. They might be good live. Now that I’ve done them some justice, what I really wanted to say is that every song is unremarkable, nerve-wracking and masturbatory, with a lead singer who seems unwilling to sing, preferring to gab obnoxiously like a stand-up comic. Sorry Hold Steady, it did almost kill me.
