Alkaline Trio, One Man Army

Split Series 5

Editor's Review:

Alkaline Trio immediately jumped out at me off the Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 comp with “Warbrain,” and I decided they might be a band worth following. This split CD confirms my intuitions, giving a glimpse of a band that seems to hang just on the “cred” side of pop-punk, either making trendiness more believable or making stripped-down old school punk prettier. The music is blissfully catchy without being too adolescent, but the crown jewel is the singing, which is about as beautiful as I imagine a male voice should sound, given that they look like dirty punks. Sharing the same disc is One Man Army, who are similar in style and talent — but with less guitar overlay, a slightly noisier sound, snarkier lyrics and a crankier singing voice, they linger slightly further from the pop crowd. But they still get the chicks.
