Ween
Live in Chicago
Editor's Review:
You can’t always judge a book (or a CD for that matter) by its cover,
but in the case of Ween’s latest release, Live in Chicago, you
actually can to some degree. The striking cover photo by Ole Lütjens depicts
the band rocking out, washed in fiery lights and smoke — matter of course
for a big rock show, which is exactly what this CD / DVD has to offer.
Innovative rock combo Ween presents its latest live recording with an accompanying
concert video in one convenient package. Filmed at the beautiful Vic Theater
in Chicago on November 8th and 9th, 2003, the DVD features intimate shots of
the band in widescreen format. The sound is left relatively raw and immediate,
communicating Dean Ween’s rich guitar work in brilliant, watery tones.
Whether hammering out the funky strum of “Voodoo Lady,” churning
out the chunky guitar riffs of “Buckingham Green” or blasting the
power pop of “Pork Roll Egg and Cheese,” Dean Ween assumes the role
of unlikely guitar hero with style.
As their music spans nearly every genre in the rock ‘n’ roll spectrum,
it seems that Ween can do no wrong; this DVD and CD highlights the band’s
versatility and their ability to turn up the heat in the live setting. Unfortunately,
this doesn’t always translate in the video. Visually, the DVD is sometimes
uninspiring with occasionally static camera work that fails to capture the excitement
of a live rock show. However, the band’s talent — which shines through
on both the CD and DVD —more than makes up for this minor flaw.
