Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand

Editor's Review:

With their debut full-length album, Glaswegian four-piece Franz Ferdinand leap to their feet with quick, choppy guitar riffs, oozing tenor lead vocals and rhythmic tension seeped in electroclash, overdriven funk rock and post-punk ferocity. Franz Ferdinand maintains excellent synergy given the diversity of influences fused within; rhythms sifted from early Talking Heads and U2 records, the quirky sense of fun found in places like Blur’s Park Life and a general flair for ‘80s British alt-pop excess. Alex Karpanos’ creeping, crooning voice demands its place at the front of the mix, his sultry insistence haunting every lyric and solmization. This is one of those records that builds on its influences, not merely plunders them, and the results are a fine addition to all things neck-snapping, bass-fueled and sweaty.
