Onelinedrawing

The Volunteers

Editor's Review:

I’m a firm believer that quality music can develop within any genre. Even disco and easy listening can be done right, as long as pretentious songwriting and clumsy lyricism are avoided at all costs. That said, Jonah Matranga, mastermind of Onelinedrawing, has allowed the phrase “this is some damned good emo,” to wander from my lips for the first time since Pinkerton. Less reliant on the edgy-but-fragile formula that drenches most emo like mousse in a metrosexual mock Mohawk, Matranga exercises the keen musical sense of a seasoned singer / songwriter. Self-doubt echoes in “A Ghost,” and in “Living Small” Matranga comes to terms with pop culture on overdrive. A departure from Matranga’s work in his mid-‘90s group Far, The Volunteers offers something more mature and perceptive than the candy-coated poser-punks filtering through the music video circuit. And that’s a damned good thing.
