Rjd2
Since We Last Spoke
Editor's Review:
When the Ohio-based producer RJD2 released his solo instrumental debut, Dead Ringer, a few years back on the underground hip-hop label Def Jux, critics and fans alike were quick to compare RJs talented sample based productions to the then-virtuoso of instrumental hip-hop, DJ Shadow. However, this time around on Since We Last Spoke, RJ utilizes much more rock samples than the funk-soul influenced tracks that thrusted him into the spotlight from his first release. There is no doubt the melancholy mood of this album revolves around relationship issues of RJD2, yet he never loses focus of the main goal, producing an extremely enjoyable record. The overall sound of S.W.L.S. is likely to draw more comparisons to The Postal Service or Radiohead than DJ Shadow, mainly because of down tempo vibe, lack of rappers and singing by RJ himself. RJD2 might lose some fans with S.W.L.S., but fuck it. If punk-ass hip-hop fans cant recognize and feel good music, let them listen to that monotonous bullshit they wanna hear.- Paul Davis
