PJ Harvey

Uh Huh Her

Editor's Review:

Polly Jean Harvey, who has had the good fortune to work with some of rock’s best producers (like Flood and Steve Albini), takes her turn solo behind the boards on her latest release, Uh Huh Her. The result is a sparce album that’s more than a little rough around the edges and all the better for it. Guitars rumble low and sinuous on tracks “The Life and Death of Mr. Badmouth” and “Shame,” or jangle warmly on songs like “The Pocket Knife” and “No Child of Mine,” but in each case, Harvey lets fancy tricks fall to the side and allows her music to breathe. Given the nature of her material - dirty and feral - she couldn’t have made a better choice; bearing its jagged, toothy grin, Uh Huh Her stands strong with the rest of Harvey’s impressive catalogue.
