It’s hard to get motivated about local music; in Chico, there are almost as many excuses not to check out a live show as there are bands to see. Sure, it may take a little extra effort, but if this latest compilation from KCSC, Chico State’s student-run Internet radio station, is any indication, taking a chance on local bands is definitely worth it. Hot Local Music 2004 presents a strong variety of music, from the political punk of P.A.W.N.S.’s “Factor II” to the musical chaos of The Americas’ “Siam Brass Knuckles” to the jazzy, soulful hip-hop of Dialecs’ “New Frontier.” Other standout tracks come courtesy of Royal Crown, who contributes the catchy, bittersweet “Train Stations,” and Mark Zempel’s simple acoustic ballad “Old Man.” While this compilation provides a nice cross-section of different acts, it’s really just a small sample of what this town has to offer.
