Atmosphere, J-Live

“Don’t Get it Backwards” b/w “Keep Steppin”

Editor's Review:

This 12-inch is everything you would expect from a piece of wax that was graced by J-Live and Slug. Newcomer Invisible is overshadowed by the two underground champs, but what better way to get your name out than to feature the best. J-Live comes correct as always with “Don’t Get It Backwards,” a motivational song that is told through a basketball metaphor. “Keep Steppin” also features Sluggo walking the righteous path, minus the basketball metaphor, but an overall uplifting life-inspired track. Tableturns artist Invisible keeps it gully with “From Sunset,” a smoothed out party jam that focuses on clever lyrics, and not the typical club paraphernalia. With dirty versions of each track, joined by instrumentals, this 12 is worth the six bucks.

Atmosphere — a.k.a. rapper Slug and his DJ-dû-jour, usually Abilities or Mr. Dibbs — holds down hip-hip in the Midwestern mecca of Minneapolis, MN. A member of the Rhymesayers crew (along with Eyedea), this enigmatic romeo of a rapper has found huge success in the underground with releases like Se7ens and the available-on-tour-only Sad Clown Bad Dub series. With the wide release of 2002’s God Loves Ugly it’s just a matter of time before this honest and talented MC breaks out on a large scale.
