Beastie Boys

To the 5 Boroughs

Editor's Review:

The good news first. The Beastie Boys are back! To the 5 Boroughs boasts 15 tracks produced and performed by Beasties, who appear to have traded in the live instruments for more of a classic, “old school” hip-hop sound. There is definitely a formula to their music, and this album capitalizes on the three switching off every couple bars with an elementary A-B rhyme pattern. The party days are over, and on …5 Boroughs, the three have taken the political route, calling out Bush and addressing the fallacies of the United States. Now the bad news. There are no real hits, and only a handful of standout tracks. Lastly, these are some of the worst rhymes I’ve ever heard, and if anybody else spit them, well, there is no way they would have a record contract.
