DJ Shadow
In Tune and On Time
Editor's Review:
Recorded and filmed live in London’s Brixton Academy, DJ Shadow has combined four albums of material, as well as some remixes and B-sides in a 78-minute set of flawless mixing. The two-disc set features a CD and a DVD version of the same set with some additional songs and visuals that are relevant to the music, not just some random psychedelic “man I’m so stoned” type shit. Nah. The visuals are just as important as the music itself and come off like a bugged-out movie with the soundtrack navigating the direction of the journey. Of course there is bonus footage, and of course it’s ill. One segment features Jurassic 5 DJs Cut Chemist and NuMark joining Shadow for an orchestrated MPC session, with each DJ using the sampler as a musical instrument and essentially playing as a band. There is also a scratch segment from the Keep In Time DVD, which features some of the above-mentioned as well as J-Rocc and Babu cutting over live drums from funk legends like James Gadson. If you’re not fortunate enough to have screens in your car, the CD somewhat serves as DJ Shadow’s greatest hits album, with hits like “Walkie Talkie” from The Private Press and “Drums of Death” from the Unkle album, as well as the crowd favorite “Organ Donor,” original and overhaul versions. Like any good DJ should, Shadow captures and controls your emotions with a set that has more progressions than David Bowie’s image.– Corey Bloom
