Warped Tour 2004 Compilation

Editor's Review:

Through its 10 year history, punk rock’s most infamous summer festival, the Vans Warped Tour, has garnered acclaim for propelling young talent to a national audience. With this latest two-disc compilation release, 50 bands have contributed songs showcasing their own brands of fury and fun. Highlights on disc one range from “The Keys to Life Vs. 15 Minutes of Fame” by the old school new school hip-hop group Atmosphere, to “American Errorist (I Hate Hate Haters)” from NOFX, a scathing political rant aimed at our current commander-in-chief. Disc two emerges as the more bitter hardcore, metal-tinged record, showcasing bands like Death By Stereo and Coheed And Cambria, among others, as the new face of punk rock. All in all, this disc is a pristine compilation, worthy of gracing your stereo at times when you feel angry and über-political.

When they started off in Maryland in 1996, Good Charlotte could barely play three chords. Twin brothers Joel (vocals) and Benji (guitar) embraced music as an outlet for familial issues-induced stress, leaving their prior endeavors (namely, baseball) behind. After adding high school friends Paul (bass) and Aaron (drums) to the lineup, the group relocated to Annapolis Maryland and played every venue in every town that would have them. After adding Billy (guitar) to the group, they began opening for bands like Bad Religion and Blink 182 and Lit, and eventually played at WHFS’s HFStival before being signed to Epic and releasing their eponymous debut in 2000. Young and the Hopeless was released in 2002.

With catchy choruses, amped performances and a shamelessly poppy approach to punk rock, Santa Barbara’s Sugarcult has been performing their aloof and bouncy music since forming in 1998. Vocalist / guitarist Tim Pagnotta apparently named the group after his neighbors; seven lesbians who referred to themselves as the ‘sugar cult.’ With bassist Airin Older and drummer Ben Davis providing harmonies and Marko 72 (expatriate of The Ataris, Swingin' Utters and Nerf herder) on guitar, the group has received national exposure through 2001’s Warped Tour, supporting bands such as Blink 182, Unwritten Law and Good Charlotte on national tours, and The Decibel Music Conference in Trinidad, West indies in May of 2001. Their Ultimatum debut, Start Static was released in August of 2001 and was produced by Matt Wallace.

Atmosphere — a.k.a. rapper Slug and his DJ-dû-jour, usually Abilities or Mr. Dibbs — holds down hip-hip in the Midwestern mecca of Minneapolis, MN. A member of the Rhymesayers crew (along with Eyedea), this enigmatic romeo of a rapper has found huge success in the underground with releases like Se7ens and the available-on-tour-only Sad Clown Bad Dub series. With the wide release of 2002’s God Loves Ugly it’s just a matter of time before this honest and talented MC breaks out on a large scale.
