Keep It Simple

Editor's Review:

Keb’ Mo’s wish is this title’s command. In response to the ever-increasing, modern day pressure to complicate, Keep It Simple is a reminder to both his audience and his self to do just that. While purist in nature, this mostly blues-centered collection actually “keeps simple” about 16 different kinds of music, but most importantly, his own. “Let Your Light Shine” forces foot-tapping, while a soft duet with Jenny Yates (“One Friend”) begs for happy tears from the listener. Every track, equally amazing, exudes obvious jazz undertones, interweaving a surfeit of piano, violin, banjo and other acoustics. Keb comes off like a slightly more Southern roots version of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper — like them, inspirational, even self-motivational, yet somehow still cool. Overall, Keep It Simple is (simply) the best chillin-on-your-front-porch-drinking-lemonade-on-a-hot-summer-day backdrop in recent circulation, which must be why it was released in…February? – David P. Brown
