Devin the Dude
To Tha X-Treme
Editor's Review:
Although he’s worked with and is respected by some of the biggest names in hip-hop such as Scarface, Too Short and Dr. Dre, Houston, Texas’ own Devin the Dude somehow remains under the radar for most hip-hop consumers, yet still manages to be adored by a small collective of fans who simply know him as “The Dude.” Not relying on his imagination for lyrical content, The Dude somehow makes dope track after track; sometimes they’re compelling, sometimes humorous, but they’re always a unique story about his two favorite hobbies: females and smoking weed. Those two subjects might seem generic or abused, yet as any Devin fan can confirm, The Dude represents hard. There’s never a dull song, or track for that matter; The Dude has so much style, I could never get tired of hearing about his favorite pastimes. Instant classics on To Tha X-Treme include “Anything” (think “Do What You Wanna Do”), the mind blowing “What?” and weed anthem “Motho.” Unless E-40 comes out with an album, To Tha X-Treme is my album of the year.– Paul Davis
