Karate

Pockets

Editor's Review:

Karate’s ‘70s vibe classic rock with jazz inspiration is interesting in its minimalism, but is ultimately not enough to carry Geoff Farina’s stale vocals. There is talent here, and the album occasionally skirts along the edge of greatness before falling into the abyss of meandering sound that lacks cohesion. The soft storytelling simplicity of “Water” is convincing enough to carry ears to the next song; unfortunately, ears are promptly assaulted with a confused mix of disco fallout and whaling electric guitar solos — not pleasant. Farina’s spoken lyrical style could almost be endearing if it wasn’t so dull. Pockets strikes me as the type of album that works when performed live in a bar buzzing with conversation and booze, but falls apart under closer inspection.
