Mastodon

Leviathan

Editor's Review:

When a band named after a giant prehistoric creature makes a CD named after a giant mythological creature, you could expect that it would be pretty damn heavy, and so it is. What you might not expect, however, is for that CD to also be filled with progressive, intricate and sometimes catchy arrangements, or overt literary references. There's allusions to Moby Dick ("I am Ahab"), an instrumental track dedicated to the elephant man ("Joseph Merrick") and one song in particular that sounds like Slayer covering Dick Dale ("Megalodon"). And if one disc of smart, aggressive, nautically-themed metal isn't enough to float your boat, the two-disc limited edition includes a bonus audio DVD with live tracks and other songs remastered in Dolby Surround. Better grab yer harpoon, matey - this is a whale of an album.
