De La Soul

The Grind Date

Editor's Review:

Sometimes it sucks to see how your favorites of yesterday have evolved over time. It was bad enough when Jerry became a Raider, but now a Seahawk? Damn. And considering the past two De La albums have less-than-normal-excellence associated with them, it was comforting to discover their latest effort, The Grind Date, is actually a pretty damn good album. De La has put together their most direct LP to date, but with only 12 cuts it’s plain to see Pos, Dave and Maseo still have that hunger. “Much More,” as seen on Dave Chappelle’s Show, is proof itself for old school De La fans that the trio still have it. With guests like Common, Ghostface, MF Doom, Flava Flav, Madlib and 9th Wonder, and a quality De La record overall, it’s encouraging for the future of this hip-hop favorite.
