DJ Krush

Jaku

Editor's Review:

Japan’s foremost turntablist, DJ Krush, is back with another well crafted album. Jaku, meaning calm and peace in Japanese, seamlessly blends in many guest musicians on various instruments for an entrapping multi-textured sound. “Still Island,” “The Beginning” and “Univearth” all benefit from the delicate sound of a Japanese flute. The latter wonderfully contrasts the frailness of the flute with beats that smack harder than a pissed-off pimp. Combining this with the Taiko drumming of Tetsuro Naito results in one of the album’s best songs. Also making guest appearances are Def Jux rappers Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif, who lend their lyrical flow to “Kill Switch” and “Nosferatu,” respectively. DJ Krush takes center stage on “Decks-athron,” letting lose with his scratching skills. Jaku is recommended for both hip-hop heads and techno freaks.
