Nas

Street’s Disciple

Editor's Review:

Caught between two worlds — one of wide commercial success and all the materialistic crap that comes along with it, and the other of the streets and underground respect desired by so many — is Nas, an artist who, since his certified classic debut, Illmatic, has walked a tightrope between the two. On his latest release, Street’s Disciple, a two-disc masterpiece of intelligently raw lyrics, clever quips and honest commentary on politics, religion, life as a family man and his experiences growing up on the streets, Nas has found a way to serve both audiences, certifying him as a rap legend. As an artist who is known for reinventing the game, he targets his mainstream fans with revolutionary songs like “Bridging the Gap,” challenging listeners to open themselves up to new styles of music. A duet with his father, blues singer Olu Dara, “Bridging the Gap” blends brilliant sounds of blues and jazz with hip-hop. An appearance by Maxwell on the upbeat, Latin jazz-inspired hit “No One Else in the Room” adds to Nas’ diversity and versatility.
Nas is able to keep himself grounded in the streets through songs like “Suicide Bounce,” which features Busta Rhymes and Nas knocking out the haters. He exposes a softer side with “Live Now,” “Rest Of My Life” and “Just A Moment,” stories of life and death backed by soft bass beats, piano and synthesizer. Furthering the showcase of Nas’ unique poetic reflections of his life are the hard-hitting “Disciple” and the old-school inspired “Sekou Story.” Nas embodies his message and works as an active disciple and innovator of the philosophy of hip-hop and the streets.
