Radiohead

The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time

Editor's Review:

So what the hell are the Radiohead short films anyway? I was wondering from the moment I heard a rumor that the band was going to be releasing some sort of footage for my rabid consumption. As it turns out, during the recording of Hail to the Thief the boys requested that fans and/or artists send in films of all sorts for a haphazard creation called Radiohead Television. The segments never ended up on the airwaves, probably because they would scare the kiddies, but eventually found their way onto DVD and into my hot little hands. Sweet.
Watching the four episodes contained on The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time reminded me of when the band unapologetically dove into making music with mysterious machines — if the records run the gamut from morphine-diffused ambience to bursting armies of brass, all of the images on this collection fit that schizophrenia nicely. Each episode is a stream of consciousness featuring anime, robotics, digital convergence, in-studio footage and interviews with the band on the inanities of celebrity, all set to familiar and unreleased Radiohead music. I can’t define the theme of these films; I can only recall the images burned into my retinas: penciled drones dropping from luxury apartments on their morning commute, claymation heroin addicts, puffy babies hawking “Freak Juice” for the local pharmacy, skeletal flies, swirling chartreuse pills, monkeys reanimating brains — you know, weird stuff. But weird in a lovely and nightmarish way that is entirely Radiohead.
