Redneck Games

Editor's Review:

Kutmasta Kurt has been lacing some of the most innovative and promising tracks for some time now, and it appears that folks are finally catching on. On Redneck Games, Kurt’s effort at a remix album, the selection of artists that he works with provides proof of his skills. The wide range of contributing talented artists includes old school rappers like Kool Keith, Beastie Boys and PMD, as well as underground artists like Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples and Mr. Lif. Even further proof of Kurt’s skill is his flip of a Linkin Park track with the help of Motion Man, that is now, dare I say, enjoyable. Chopped, looped or polished, it seems whatever Kurt does to the beat, he certainly does it correctly. If anything, Redneck Games helps establish the versatility of Kutmasta Kurt behind the boards and lets artists know who to come to if they want some dope beats behind them.

This Boston native is one of the independent rap game's most dissonant MCs, a lyrical burner who spits clever and jumpin' rhymes of a sociopolitical nature. As a member of the Definitive Jux label roster, Lif is in good company with El P, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock and more, and Lif's 2002 release, Emergency Rations just might be rap's definitive commentary on life in the millennium-to-date.
