Cake

Pressure Chief

Editor's Review:

Saying that Cake lacks the capacity to grow and evolve is not much of a stretch. And though this might be perceived as a knock, it proves to sound as sweet as John McCrea's straight-man act on the mic. Their latest offbeat entry showcases the unmistakable baritone vocals and predictable yet hypnotizing picking that epitomizes Cake's signature sound. Pressure Chief, however, manages to come through with an old school, video game artificiality that winds with precision through most of the album's 11 tracks. Joining the brain-imbedding hooks and quirky sing-a-longs is McCrea's subtle, consistent lyrical strength, like "Go, go ahead and destroy this / Better come with an army" in "Take it All Away." Despite a few lackluster tracks, such as "Carbon Monoxide," which falls short instrumentally and lyrically, this typical Cake album is definitely worth checking out.
