Saul Williams

Saul Williams

Editor's Review:

Having made a name for himself as an actor and slam poet, Saul Williams continues to branch out into music with the release of his impressive self-titled album. Musically, this varied platter draws from hip-hop, jazz, industrial and punk influences, with Saul's politically and socially conscious lyrics tying the styles together. "Talk to Strangers" sets it off with activist lyrics spoken over a tense piano. The following tracks release this tension with sped up hip-hop beats, often made from distorted programming. Plus, Williams scores punk points for sampling "Supertouch" by Bad Brains to create "Telegram." "Act III Scene 2 (Shakespeare)" is a rallying cry to America's youth that features guest vocals from Zack De La Rocha. Saul Williams is highly recommended for political punks and hip-hoppers looking to destroy the system in favor of a better future.
