...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Worlds Apart
Editor's Review:
Beginning with a string overture that runs headfirst into a towering wall of distorted guitar, Worlds Apart plays out like a hardcore symphony. Linked together by ambient nature sounds, short orchestral interludes, choirs and brief spoken phrases, it's easy to get lost in the album's decadence. However, though hardly stripped down, Worlds Apart maintains a frighteningly raw energy, rooted in simple, universal emotion.Though not as blatantly fierce as the band's previous works, Worlds Apart is more like the wolf in sheep's clothing - as sweetly melodic as it is plaintive and lyrically unsettling. In the title track, vocalist Conrad Keely howls "how we've laughed as they shoveled the ashes / wrath hath soured / blood and death we will pay back the debt / of this candy store of ours" over swirling, searingly bright guitars and convulsive rhythms. "The Rest Will Follow" incorporates airy, atmospheric verses building into pounding, anthemic choruses that intone "I know how the best will fall / and the rest will follow." "A Classic Arts Showcase" shifts from a heavy battery of guitars to a dramatic string arrangement and back again. With a broader pallet at their disposal, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead hits from all sides with a variety of different weapons. Worlds Apart pulls in so many different directions, it's often difficult to keep it all straight, but the chaotic nature of this recording seems born from its subject matter. Rife with disillusionment, confusion and rage, Worlds Apart is musically rapturous, lyrically volatile and a stark but vivid picture of the world through its authors' eyes.
