50 Cent
The Massacre
Editor's Review:
The music industry has never witnessed a promotional/publicity campaign like the one backing 50 Cent’s sophomore release, The Massacre. And yes, it’s even bigger than his first time around. From buying hour blocks of radio time for interviews and album snippets, to bullshit “beefs” with his partner Game and every other New York rapper, 50 epitomizes what’s wrong with hip-hop. It’s no longer about the music, it’s merely entertainment now. Get your popcorn and throw away your brain because you won’t be needing it.It might be different if the album was good, but it’s not. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ is a classic; The Massacre is just boring. There are no certified hits, and lyrically it sounds as if 50 has lost his creative edge. “Candy Shop” is just an alternate take of last year’s “Magic Stick,” with one of the few standout tracks being the recycled “Hate It or Love It” G-Unit remix. Among horrific songs like “Gatman and Robbin” with Eminem and “Piggy Bank,” there are some hidden jewels. The Hi-Tek produced “Get in My Car” is a hypnotic banger, and “Gunz Come Out” is some wild ass gangster shit, but dope tracks make up the minority of the 21 songs.
It sounds like 50 is uninspired. Maybe he is wearing himself too thin. Maybe he really did give Game most of the dope tracks. I don’t know. One thing is for sure, though, and that is that 50 will sell millions of records.
