Mike Doughty

Skittish/Rockity Roll

Editor's Review:

Former Soul Coughing main man Mike Doughty presents two albums, recorded six years apart, in one convenient package. First is the 1996 acoustic album Skittish, which found notoriety on the original Napster when Doughty’s label rejected it. Acoustic guitar and Doughty’s unique vocals comprise the majority of Skittish. “All the Dirt,” an ode to shedding life’s complexities and the cover combo “Real Love/It’s Only Life” are a couple of the unplugged highlights. The second album is 2003’s Rockity Roll, which is acoustic based but also incorporates some mellow drum machines and synthesizers. Plus, there are two live songs, two Skittish outtakes and a song from the Evenhand soundtrack for bonus tracks. Skittish is a nice change, but Rockity really rolls since Doughty is at his best when surrounded by more high-tech instrumentation.
