the Decemberists

Picaresque

Editor's Review:

Simultaneously coming across as pretentious, yet somehow fun and accessible, The Decemberists create narrative-driven songs documenting stories straight out of fairy tales and classic literature. Pounding drums and chaotic string and horn arrangements cohabitate with sparse acoustic strumming as lead singer Colin Meloy spins yarns of romantic double-suicide, lovesick engine drivers and giant man-eating whales in his Billie Joe Armstrong meets Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) wail. The album sounds absolutely beautiful from a technical standpoint, as Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) continues to prove that he’s one of the best up-and-coming producers around. Picaresque is a bold and epic album that deserves to find itself stocked on the shelves of theater arts and English majors everywhere.
