System of a Down

Mesmerize

Editor's Review:

Finally, the wait for the new System of a Down album has come to an end. It has arrived, but the question is: Will it be all you had hoped for? System‘s latest, Mesmerize, is definitely an album that catches your attention. This band has that unique ability to giving you a dose of adrenaline-propelled hard rock while dropping some political knowledge as well. While Mesmerize still has substance, it’s doesn’t seem to have quite as much as their earlier music. The style of eerie harmonizing (ranging from screaming and growling to actual melodies) with a combination of driving, forceful rhythms on drums and guitar, always results in catchy songs that seem to stay in your brain for days on end. The band gives a diverse assortment of songs that touch on random subjects like Tony Danza and violent pornography, and songs that actually convey interesting messages about our society, like their single “B.Y.O.B.” and “Sad Statue.”
If you listen through all the lyrics, it becomes apparent that band mates Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian had bold opinions that they wanted to share with listeners regarding how our country is currently being operated. Comparatively speaking, it’s a toss up as to whether Mesmerize lives up to expectations. So, for all of those who had extremely high hopes for this CD, it might not quite reach your ideals, but it certainly will entertain. Even if the CD doesn’t all together mesmerize, it will intrigue.
