Common

Be

Editor's Review:

Maybe it’s because my girl skipped town, but I’m really feeling Common’s pessimistic love vibe on this one. Hardcore fans may feel abandoned, but most of them jumped ship a couple albums ago so fuck ‘em. With Kanye West handling almost all of the production, a soulful, sample-heavy sound is eminent, fitting Common’s street savvy consciousness perfectly. The lead single “The Corner” is the certified knocker, but his depth as a lyricist is best demonstrated in conceptual tracks like “Faithful” and “Testify.” The one shortcoming with the album is that it’s too short. In its defense, there are no filler tracks, but running only 11 songs, you can’t help but want more musical nutrition. Regardless, it’s a great album so check it out.
