the Mother Hips

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Editor's Review:

Yet another chapter has unfolded in the Mother Hips chronicles. Before last summer’s triumphant return to LaSalle’s, the Mother Hips were in San Francisco at the Café du Nord where they played Neil Young’s entire Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere album during their first set. The portion of the show that featured the tribute was recorded and is now available for all the diehards and tape traders who have been waiting patiently to get their paws on this now-infamous show. The performance is available for download only at www.motherhips.com in both MP3 and FLAC format.
The performance was a significant one for a couple of reasons. Apparently, the Young album is rumored to be the record that first inspired Tim Bluhm to learn to play the guitar. Also, most Hips fans will find the recording to be quite a revealing performance; it’s as if Mother Hips have decided to divulge deep, dark secrets about the formation of their sound and their performance techniques. “Cinnamon Girl” bears a striking resemblance in its pace and hooks to Hips tunes like “Grizzly Bear” and “Singing Seems to Ease Me.” Young’s “Down By the River” contains the same kinds of half-pulled-apart chords and spooky waltz timing that make up Hips tunes like “The Figure Eleven.” The album truly is a treat and worth the affordable download fee.
