Queens of the Stone Age

Over the Years and Through the Woods

Editor's Review:

If you are not already familiar with the Queens’ other four albums, then this isn’t probably the best place to first hear them. It isn’t that Over the River... is bad, it’s just a live recording, and the CD portion will most likely appeal to hardcore fans only. It can be hard to appreciate the long, stone-y versions of several of these songs, and periodically, it drags. But the real draw to this package isn’t the live album, it’s the live DVD, which features an extensive concert of old favorites and quite a few B-sides and Desert Sessions songs. Although a lot of people bitch about the lack of Dave Grohl or Nick Oliveri, I personally miss Mark Lanegan the most because his songs were some of my favorites, and the full concert lacks some due to his absence. The DVD also features live footage from throughout their whole career; that’s the real gold. You can see the slightly more humble, yet still dynamic beginnings, and work your way up to the big venues and laser-light laced concerts they now put on. Overall, if you haven’t heard Queens but want to, start out with any of their studio albums (because they are all great) and then go out and buy this live combo. If you are a long standing Queens fan and you don’t have this, go pick it up, but you probably already have.
