Asskickers

Let It Burn

Editor's Review:

For some time now, the Asskickers have been the gritty, sneering antithesis to everything mainstream country music stands for, and in so doing, have become a shining example of everything that makes country such a potent and vehemently American mode of expression. On their latest release, Let It Burn, those who are familiar with the group’s work will (thankfully) find more of the same — bawdy tales of fetishist cowboys, angry rednecks, vicious dogs and Internet pornographers — but the Asskickers also take a long hard look at the world outside of the rough saloons and whorehouses. Songs like “Gasoline,” drenched in weepy pedal steel guitar, and “Patriot” speak of bitter disillusionment with the state of American society and politics both at home and overseas. Bob Howard’s vocals are as communicative and pointed as ever; Let It Burn is a combination of dusty country and roots rock ‘n’ roll that don’t give a fuck about Nashville.
