Old Enough 2 Know Better: 15 Years of Merge Records

Editor's Review:

First, let it be stated that this compilation is both awesome and aggravating; awesome because over three CDs and 61 tracks, hardly a one is worth skipping; aggravating because my wallet is going to hate me — having been exposed to a wealth of bands on the Merge roster that I’d never previously experienced, there’s more than a few records that I now seriously need to seek out and add to my collection. Such is the blessing and back-handed benefit of a good compilation album — while you may pick it up based on the strength of the comp’s theme, or a few of the tracks and artists within, hidden in between the obvious highlights are more than a few obscure standouts. In my case, with Merge’s Old Enough 2 Know Better, artists such as M. Ward, Neutral Milk Hotel and Versus already spend quality time in my regular rotation, but bands such as Spent, The Beatnik Filmstars and Annie Hayden now require further investigation. So much for my next pay check…

Built up from the strength of bands like Superchunk and Polvo and reinforced by a working relationship with Chicago’s revered Touch & Go Records, Merge has consistently offered a roster of strong, indie-pop-oriented artists; on their 15th anniversary album, these offerings float by in a pleasant procession, alternately humid, breezy, charmingly lo-fi and occasionally off-key. Another boon for Old Enough 2 Know Better is its low sticker price, and the fact that the sales proceeds will be donated to the Future of Music Coalition (www.futureofmusic.com). If you’re generally a fan of indie rock, this album’s a shoo-in.
