Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2

Editor's Review:

Finally, a punk rock compilation with some direction! Most comps have historically consisted of nothing but singles and maybe a crappy “bonus” DVD to boot. Sure, Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2 has all that, but enough added substance to make it a noteworthy addition to your collection.

The music menu reaches as far back as Operation Ivy (“Unity”), but also includes modern favorites giving their two cents when it comes to the current administration. Ranging from the punk of NOFX, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Lagwagon, Rancid and Bad Religion, to the more radio-friendly Foo Fighters and No Doubt, artists aptly find a balance between revealing their ire and articulating well enough to get their point across. The DVD component takes an additional step beyond just some low-budget live footage of the same shit; here we have the obligatory music videos, but the nub of this hubbub lies in its political shorts and comedy. There’s the gospel of Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman and her attack on mainstream American media; a tear-jerking BBC-produced documentary of the last presidential un-election by award-winning American journalist Greg Palast; an exceptional Bush impersonation performed by the one and only Will Ferrell; and a ridiculous amount of other cool shit.

This CD / DVD combo also wins the award for Best Booklet. You’ll first find a long word from Justin Sane of Anti-Flag, shorter testimonials from many of the participating bands, a “20 More Reasons to Hate Bush Jr.” guide and a mission statement to gain support for this collection’s Punk Voter cause. So do your country and self a favor and buy this one.

The name Dave Grohl first appeared on the lips of the music nation at large through his role smacking the skins for pensive Seattle grunge icons Nirvana, first appearing on their breakthrough album Nevermind. After the self-inflicted demise of Kurt Cobain, Grohl continued with what he had always been doing; writing songs. After recording 15 tracks and putting the word out that he had a new project, a massive bidding war ensued. The result was the 1995 self-titled Capitol debut of his new group, Foo Fighters. Blending hard guitar rock with pop punk melodies, the group quickly escaped the shadow of Grohl’s prior band. Foo Fighters — consisting of David Grohl (guitar and vocals), Nate Mendel (bass), William Goldsmith (drums, who was replaced by Taylor Hawkins) and Pat Smear (guitar, who was replaced by Franz Stahl, who was replaced by Chris Shiflett) — has consistently released albums sparkling expert with penmanship and wit, including 1997’s Colour and Shape and 2002’s One By One.

Pop-punk icons Green Day got their start in 1987 when California Bay Area natives Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Pritchard (later known as Mike Dirnt) formed a band called Sweet Children. In 1989 they changed their name to Green Day and recorded their first EP, 1,000 Hours on Lookout! Records. After becoming mainstays at Berkeley’s seminal Gilman Street punk venue, they recorded 39/Smooth, replacing drummer Al Sobrante with Tré Cool soon after. Building momentum and an underground following with 1992’s Kerplunk, the group signed to Reprise records in 1994 and released the multi-platinum-selling Dookie. Spots on Lollapalooza and Woodstock ’94 ensued, followed by a Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Performance. They then released Insomniac in 1995 and Nimrod two years later, featuring the melancholy lighter-in-the-air acoustic ballad, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” Warning was released in 2000 with Shenanigans following in 2002.

Long-standing proponents of the New York City hardcore scene, Sick of It All have seen the ups and downs of fringe-stardom firsthand. Throughout violent acts committed by their fans (and denounced by the band members) to accusations of selling out, the group has continued to write relentless and powerful music and tour the world endlessly. Formed in the early-‘80s in New York by brothers Lou and Pete Koller (vocals and guitar, respectively), the group released a self-titled EP in 1987 on Revelation, following it up with Blood, Sweat & No Tears on the Combat indie label. Sick Of It All has bounced from label to label, using both independents and majors to release their aggressive music. Their latest stint, Live in a Dive, was released on Fat Wreck Chords in 2002.

With catchy choruses, amped performances and a shamelessly poppy approach to punk rock, Santa Barbara’s Sugarcult has been performing their aloof and bouncy music since forming in 1998. Vocalist / guitarist Tim Pagnotta apparently named the group after his neighbors; seven lesbians who referred to themselves as the ‘sugar cult.’ With bassist Airin Older and drummer Ben Davis providing harmonies and Marko 72 (expatriate of The Ataris, Swingin' Utters and Nerf herder) on guitar, the group has received national exposure through 2001’s Warped Tour, supporting bands such as Blink 182, Unwritten Law and Good Charlotte on national tours, and The Decibel Music Conference in Trinidad, West indies in May of 2001. Their Ultimatum debut, Start Static was released in August of 2001 and was produced by Matt Wallace.

This group sits comfortably in the pop-punk genre, finding solace in their honest, hard, fast and melodic music. Originally formed in Orange County New York, the band quickly developed their material, cementing their line-up in the winter of 1998. Doing what they love, they played every show and tour at their disposal. Their debut release Looking Up (recorded for the NY based Fastmusic Internet lable) earned them the opportunity to play with the likes of MXPX and The Get Up Kids. They have played The Vans Warped Tour several times, and recently signed up with Island Records, releasing a self-titled five song EP in April of 2002.
